The little RAV4 kick-started the compact four-wheel-drive class, which has now become the fastest growing in the country. The Cruiser adds ABS brakes, alloy wheels with 235/60 tyres, sunroof, leather-wrapped wheel and gear lever, roof rails and extra body-coloured exterior plastic. There's plenty of head room and leg room up front and good vision all round. Seat and wheel height adjusters are provided. The dash has a Germanic, pseudo heavy industrial look, with metallic-finish plastics, exposed hex screws and pod style instruments with weirdly coloured faces - it's a Toyota, so there are no useless, fiddly buttons and everything is easy to find and use. Great cupholders, which can take any size container, and lots of oddment storage, including an overhead sunglasses holder, are useful; excessively bright audio and airconditioning panel lighting, which reflects brightly on the windscreen, is distracting at night.
