The Mitsubishi Outlander is a crossover manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek when it was introduced in Japan in 2001, and was based on the Mitsubishi ASX concept vehicle exhibited at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. The ASX (Active Sports Crossover) represented Mitsubishi's approach to the industry wide SUV trend for retaining the all-season and off-road abilities offered by a high ground clearance and four-wheel drive, while still offering car-like levels of emissions, economy and size. It features a new DOHC 2.4 L 16-valve MIVEC engine; INVECS-III continuously variable transmission (CVT), Mitsubishi's AWC system which features electronically controlled four wheel drive and stability control, on a stretched Mitsubishi GS platform. The 2008 Outlander carries over the drive trains from the previous model, with the LS model being powered by the 2.4 litre 16-valve 125kW/226Nm DOHC MIVEC (Mitsubishi's variable valve timing) engine. A CVT (continuous variable transmission) with INVECS III and 6-speed 'Sport Mode' tiptronic-style sequential shifting function is a feature of this very popular SUV. Mitsubishi has enhanced the interior appointments of the MY09 vehicles, including trim treatment, equipment levels and instrumentation. External upgrades to the MY09 Outlander include new alloy wheels to LS, new headlamps to selected models and revised door decals. This Outlander LS is fitted out with the space saving 5 seat layout. All Outlanders feature Mitsubishi's All Wheel Control (AWC) technology, which incorporates Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology and an electronically controlled, on-demand all wheel drive system with Active Stability Control is now standard on all models. In addition to the ASTC, MY09 Outlander four-cylinder LS variants add 16 inch alloy wheels and fully automatic air-conditioning to its already-outstanding specification levels. Internal design updates include new silver detail to the instrument panel and new door trim with cloth inserts and ornamentation.
